Welcome in the first module: Preparation. In this module, we are going to discuss everything that you need to prepare your microlecture from selecting a subject to preparing your script and visuals. Please go through the pages step by step and work on your own microlecture as you proceed. Most of this module consists of self-study. At the end of this module you will be asked to hand in your script and visuals and you will receive feedback on this from the course trainers. If any questions come up in the meantime, do not hesitate to contact your course trainers.

Subject

You may already have a subject in mind or you may not. If you do not, a few ideas to get you started may be:

What is a frequently asked question by students who follow your course? The explanation may be a good topic for a microlecture.
What information are you telling often that is not very susceptible to change in the coming years?
What topic or process do some students find difficult to comprehend after hearing it only once?
If you have no idea yet, you may decide to make a “teaser” video for your course that you can place on the homepage of your (Canvas) course.

Setting

The next important decision is choosing a setting. The microlecture is a medium that can be used for an incredible variety of purposes and subjects. The UT can help you facilitate some forms of microlectures, but you can also independently record your microlecture. In this course you have already seen some examples of the “classic” DIY-studio flavour of microlectures, but there is more. We will focus on tools and resources that are easily available for you and thus, there are five different formats that should be highlighted. Please follow the links to their respective pages to learn more about them.

Deciding which option suits your needs is an important step in recording your microlecture. Please take a look at the options and decide which option(s) suit your subject and microlecture needs.
