This lecture briefly reviews the historical evolution of conceptual modeling notations from First-Order Logics (FOL), to Ross Quillian's Semantic Networks and KL-ONE, to ER and UML Class Diagrams - with a special attention to FOL and UML. Additionally, it exemplifies how FOL can be used to formalize UML Class Diagrams and, hence, support their verification through automated reasoning.
