Currently, there is no overarching UT policy on AI. However, several policies have implications for how UT educators should approach AI in assessment tasks.

In the Student Charter, which applies to all UT students, a general description is provided for what is seen as academic misconduct or fraud, which also encompasses plagiarism and free-riding. Article 6.7 paragraph 1 defines cheating/fraud as follows: "During a test or exam, the student uses (any form of) assistance, resources or devices (electronic or technological) other than the ones whose use the examiner or supervisor has permitted prior to the start of the study unit and/or exam or test, or whose use the student knew or ought to have known was not permitted". GenAI programs or applications are considered ‘assistance, resources or devices’ and, consequently, prior permission by the examiner or supervisor is needed for their use.

The Examination Board (EB) of the respective faculty decides whether cheating/fraud has occurred. The rules and regulations of each EB specify which measures are taken in case cheating/fraud is established.

Course-specific AI policies should be defined by teaching staff in agreement with the programme management team to specify whether AI tools may be used in each course, which tools, and under which restrictions.

‘Use of AI in Education at the University of Twente’ (2023) was first used to inform course policies on AI. In this section of the hub, we propose an updated template for courses’ AI policies in this section developed in collaboration with the Exam Boards in 2025.

'ChatGPT Policy Recommendations' (Version: 9 February 2023), written by Nolen Gertz (BMS EB-IS) and Derya Demirtas (BMS EB-MS), offers some reflections on ChatGPT as well as its threats and opportunities and provides guidelines to teachers.

Finally, the EU AI Act, establishing a regulatory framework for AI within the EU, has implications for teachers’ use of AI in summative and formative assessment (grading and feedback). If you wish to use AI to abide by the key principles below:

Transparency: inform students (and parents if under 18) about AI use, including how decisions are made.
Human oversight: always maintain the ability to intervene or override AI results to ensure fairness.
Data quality: ensure the data used is relevant, unbiased, and high quality to avoid unfair assessments.
Accountability: keep records and be ready to explain AI outcomes.
Conformity and safety: verify that the AI system has passed a conformity assessment to meet safety standards.
