Results: You will be writing an Essay describing the work done on improving search quality for MedLine search using TREC Genomics data (Notebook 6, Parts 2 and 3, and other notebooks). An Essay is a short piece of writing where writers provide their views on a topic. You do not have to support your viewpoint by a literature study, citing the works of earlier experts (this would make your essay a research paper). However, we do ask you to cite the chapters of Manning, Raghavan and Schütze, Introduction to Information Retrieval, Cambridge University Press. 2008. http://informationretrieval.org/ Your work work needs to address (and will be graded by) the following points.
Essay: Use the ACM proceedings template and write no more than 2 pages (see: http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template). Your essay should contain:
Introduction: Problem statement, take into account the challenges of Notebook 2.
Dataset & Methods: Describe 1) the task and the data; 2) your evaluation measure(s); 3) the use of a significance test? 4) Your proposed system, mentioning for instance: the retrieval model, analyzer, (multi-)field indices, preprocessing, external data used, etc.
Results: Evaluation results of the baseline and the proposed system: 1) What settings or parameters (if any) give the best results? 2) Describe the cases where your proposed system performs better/worse than the baseline.
Conclusion: Answer the following questions: 1) Does the proposed system improve the baseline? 2) What are your recommendation for TREC Genomics? 3) What are suggestions for future work?
Present your approaches in general information retrieval terms as used by Manning et al. Avoid Elasticsearch-specific terminology. Cite Manning et al. if possible.
Motivate your work: Why did you choose the evaluation measure? How does the proposed system address the problem? What is your baseline system and why?
The essay should provide details for someone to replicate your work.
Make proper use of (the English) language.
Students will be additionally rewarded that: 1) take on a complex problem; 2) test creative solutions to a problem; 3) provided good solutions for the notebooks.
Can't change a rubric once you've started using it.
